Jackson County Executive addresses future of sports teams and new sales tax proposition

“Regardless of how the vote turns out this Tuesday, I remain committed to working with the teams to ensure their presence in Jackson County well into the future,” he said. “However, it is disheartening to witness the amount of misinformation being circulated by some proponents of the new sales tax initiative. To set the record straight, voters are indeed being asked to approve a new sales tax. It’s crucial that our residents receive accurate information to make informed decisions."

In addition to expressing his disappointment over the confusion created purposefully by the new tax proponents in his letter, County Executive White said the financial implications of the proposed sales tax measures are significant and warrant careful consideration. A 25-year extension of a 3/16% sales tax is estimated to generate approximately $690 million in revenue. In contrast, the proposal for a new 40-year 3/8% sales tax is projected to generate around $2.5 billion. This stark difference underscores the long-term economic impact of these proposals on the community and the resources available for future projects and initiatives.

"In the event the vote does not pass, I am ready to sit down immediately with one or both teams to explore a framework that serves our collective interests,” White said. “Specifically, in light of the Royals' numerous unanswered questions and their rapidly evolving plans, a more focused approach may be warranted. Therefore, I am open to considering a Chiefs-only ballot issue as early as August or November of this year. This is contingent upon reaching a fair and equitable agreement and finalizing enforceable leases and community benefits agreements (CBAs) well ahead of placing it on the ballot."

This statement underscores the County Executive’s proactive and pragmatic approach to maintaining the rich sports heritage of Jackson County, emphasizing readiness to adapt strategies as necessary to meet the community and teams' needs.

"We stand at a pivotal moment where truth, clarity and equity are paramount. I am committed to leading these efforts with the best interest of Jackson County and its beloved residents in mind," White said.
