Trending: Kansas City Suffers Another Deadly Mass Shooting

As always, we'll clarify terms:

Gun Violence Archive, a data collection and research group, defines mass shootings as an incident in which at least four people are injured or killed, excluding the shooter. 

USA Today and most major news organizations both conservative and progressive also use this definition. 

And so . . .

Less than two weeks after a fatal mass shooting at the Chiefs Super Bowl Rally garnered global headlines, this morning an urban core spate of gunfire also claimed a life and caused critical injuries. Moreover, after gunfire injured a half dozen earlier this year at Crown Center . . . Mass shooting incidents seem to be trending in KC Proper for 2024.

Even worse . . .

Kansas City is quickly catching up to last year's deadly pace . . .

Referencing the KC Daily Homicide Analysis: This is the 18th KCMO homicide so far in 2024 compared to 21 at this time last year. Since the early Winter warmup we've seen a pronounced spike in local murders which indicates that bad weather might be the only thing REALLY impacting the local quotient of violence despite anti-crime efforts costing MILLIONS touted by elected officials.

Homicide 4700 blk of Independence Ave

This morning around 2:30 AM officers were dispatched to the 4700 block of Independence Avenue on a sound of shots. While en route they received several calls regarding shots in the area.

Upon arrival, officers learned that multiple victims were transported to area hospitals by private conveyance.  Two victims had non life threatening injuries, and another had life threatening injuries from apparent gun shot wounds. The fourth victim was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a dispute happened between several individuals in a nearby parking lot before the shooting occurred.

Detectives are canvassing for witnesses and crime scene investigators are processing the scene for evidence to try to give detectives more information about what led up to the incident.

We are committed to assisting victims of violent crimes through use of Missouri’s Protection Program for Victims/Witnesses of Violent Crime. Funding for temporary, or even permanent relocation, may be available but is subject to pre-approval by the State’s administering agency.

We are working with Partners for Peace in all our homicide investigations to monitor risks for retaliation and provide social services to affected residents.
