Show-Me Grocery Sales Tax Promises Expiring Amid Jeff City Gridlock

Here's another good idea that's going nowhere as Missouri politicos slap fight over parking spaces, power and culture war and voters continue to cut back food budgets . . . Take a peek:

"Missouri is one of 13 states in the country, including Illinois that taxes the food you buy at the store. Multiple bills have been introduced over the years to put an end to it.

"At least six filed bills have not been assigned to the committee after nearly five weeks.  The Republican leadership of the Missouri General Assembly has not yet referred any of the bills aimed at curbing state and local sales taxes on groceries. The state currently levies a 1.225% tax on retail food sales which is deposited into the state’s school district trust fund. Local municipalities can impose taxes on food sales as well.

"Eliminating the tax has been a stated priority of many Democrats and some Republicans who see the policy as having an outsized impact on middle and low–income households."
