New FAA Rules For Downtown Kansas City Airport Boost Skyscrapers For River Market

Here's a fun tidbit that most local news outlets don't know or can't report . . .

The River Market is home to more than a few local "environmental activists" who don't mind hypocritically advocating for neighborhood killing skyscrapers that overshadow everything and everyone else below.

Our pal "Staubio" wants to save the planet but seemingly doesn't realize all of the carbon emissions powering the delivery of his pricey Amazon orders.

Still . . .

These hipsters have standing amongst council dude Eric Bunch and all of the other upwardly mobile middle-class white people who love Mayor Q. Eventually, it was only a matter of time until they got their way.

Their will be done with this bit of Friday future news for the River Market . . . A place where real estate schemes and empty condos offer the illusion of progress but, strangely, very little foot traffic . . .

"The new language requires aircraft arriving and departing from the downtown airport to reach 1,000 feet before flying over the River Market District.

"The new flight path, which decreases incident probability, will allow for the development of taller mixed-use buildings in the district, according to a press release."

A quote from the Biz Journal on the topic . . .

"The amended FAA language for the Downtown Airport first was put in the agency's directory Nov. 30, and recurred Thursday in a routine update. A city release on Friday highlighted the language, plus another "new" provision cautioning pilots about "multiple obstructions half a mile to one-mile East Southeast from Runway 19 up to 290 feet above ground level or 1,100 feet above mean sea level." However, that item has been part of the FAA's directory for some time, dating at least to June 15.

"(City Manager Brian) Platt said the provisions together will open the door for greater density in mixed-use proposals, while making space in the Downtown Airport's flight path to decrease the potential for incidents. "

New FAA guidelines for Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport allow for development of River Market, downtown

KCMO City Manager Brian Platte announced Thursday updates to the FAA's guidelines for the Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport that will allow for new development in the River Market and downtown.

City Manager: New FAA language clears way for taller River Market projects - Kansas City Business Journal

The Federal Aviation Administration recently has started alerting pilots using the Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport to reach a certain altitude before turning to the east. The change bodes well for taller building proposals in the River Market, said City Manager Brian Platt, who has pushed back on agency findings that multiple neighborhood plans would create airspace hazards.
