KCPD Chief Announces 11-Hour Shifts To Fight Crime: Will It Work?!?

Our main TKC question to spark conversation and match the skeptical & snarky tone of our bloggy community:

HOW WILL WORKING TIRED-ASS COPS TO DEATH HELP CURB KANSAS CITY CRIME?!?

I'm open to listening to any reasonable answers.

Is the union good with this surprise workload spike?!?

Here's the police statement and we'll focus on blog community reaction tonight and think about this one more overnight . . .

"KCPD Chief Stacey Graves promised to deliver a police department that would provide top notch service, reaffirming KCPD’s commitment to the safety and betterment of Kansas City. She said one way to accomplish this is to change from a 10-hour to an 11-hour shift for all patrol division officers. Currently down roughly 300 officers, the 11-hour shift will ease a critical staffing shortage and deploy more officers on the street during peak times. It will reduce response times and provide officers the opportunity to proactively address crime issues. The 11-hour shift begins on January 21."

 After documenting 100 murders . . . Here's the quote . . .

Despite the sobering numbers, Graves praised homicide detectives, who currently have a 74% homicide clearance rate. The average nationwide is a shade over 50%.

Chief Graves also noted that patrol officers would now be working eleven hour shifts, a change up from the present shift length of ten hours. The Chief also pledged more focused deterrence enforcement initiatives, a practice modeled after the old NoVA (No Violence Alliance) program the department was utilizing under former Chief Rick Smith. That program targets police resources toward individuals and networks involved in criminal activity.
