Income discrimination is when renters are denied a lease because of how they get paid, if they use public programs, or if they have bad credit. On Thursday, the mayor and City Council voted 10 to 3, passing an ordinance.

“It’s an exciting day here at City Hall,” Lucas said. “What the ban does, in so many words, is create opportunity for people.”

Lucas also said the ban helps to address the city’s housing crisis.

“It also is something that fundamentally says, in Kansas City, you are equal, and you belong,” Lucas said. “No matter how you earn your income, no matter how you live and survive, no matter your family, you belong here. Everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to sleep.”
