Kansas City Playlist: Royals Will Leave In The Dead Of Night

Right now Kansas City is jam packed with sports dudes and political pundits claiming insight into stadium and sales tax negotiations in order to keep the Royals despite the home team's abysmal record. Did we forget that they lost 106 games in 2023?!? Any hooters, most of the chattering class "perspective" is just content filler for ads or requests for donations.

Meanwhile . . .

This post isn't about sharing any TOP SECRET info just relaying a truism about how these things typically play out.

What we know for certain . . .

WHEN KANSAS CITY ROYALS INEVITABLY SKIP TOWN THEY'LL DO IT IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT AND WON'T ANSWER ANY LOCAL NEWS QUESTIONS!!!

It's just how these things works.

Lady friends claim they're just going out with "the girls" dancing.

Dads promise they'll be back after picking up a pack of cigarettes.

And that's "just the tip" of so many broken promises that serve to maintain the status quo.

Accordingly . . .

The late night departure will feel like a betrayal and blame will be directed against the former home team owner but the reality is the local news, elected officials and even fans will be left behind and deserve most of the scorn.

Sports newsies and "journalists" higher up on the food chain never held the team accountable. Heck, the best sports columnist in Kansas City actually joined the team in order to write PR content, we can only hope they drop him off somewhere outside of Belton on their midnight goodbye voyage.

There are only one or two KCMO politicos who have been forthright about the impending departure.

And, sorry, Kansas City baseball fans have always been the worst. It's unclear if it's sun stroke or just middle-class Midwestern malaise that prevents the cowtown crowd from taking on their betters.

Accordingly . . .

It may be sooner or later . . . But eventually the team is going to pack up and leave in the middle of the night and when it happens . . . Kansas City shouldn't feign surprise.

And all of this inspires our www.TonysKansasCity.com playlist on the topic late night adventures . . .

The iconic 80s glorified drum solo "In The Air Tonight" might or MIGHT NOT BE about that time Phil Collins witnessed a murder . . . But the song serves as a good place to start our list . . .

There are better versions of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" which chronicles the fall of the South but somehow this Joan Baez cover seems appropriate as Nashville emerges as a serious contender to steal the Royals . . .

Nights In White Satin by the Moody Blues is an EPIC rock song released in 1967 and speaks to a long ago time of rock legends . . . Apropos for a team that has likely already enjoyed its best years.

Let's pick things up with the Rolling Stones and "Undercover Of The Night" -- A song with an early 80s music video that's completely ridiculous and ALMOST ruins a worthwhile track:

Finally, we finish with Bob Seger's "Night Moves" which speaks to nearly lost memories of youth and long gone glory days never to return as we continue to move forward . . .

As always, thanks for reading this week and have a safe & fun Saturday night.
