Here at TKC we always want to visit with old friends for the holidays. Accordingly, we share this note from a longtime denizens of the local discourse who continues his campaign for elected office.
Clay Chastain press release: Mayor Lucas must submit his resignation to the public because he broke his pledge to protect the public's safety, and no pledge is more important to the public than a pledge to protect its safety.
Over 4-years ago, Mayor Quinton Lucas promised the people he would abate the killing if the voters elected him Mayor. Over 4-years later, KC's homicide crisis has not only worsened under Lucas' leadership, but Lucas has also put forth an appalling, distracting effort to try and shift the blame to guns and fentanyl. But if violent crime is merely a function of too many guns, why is violent crime decreasing across America (down 6% in 2022) while gun ownership is soaring? Lucas has also tried to play the victim game by claiming people are trying to gain some personal advantage on him by using KC's homicide crisis as "leverage". In fact, it was Lucas who used the homicide crisis as leverage (to get elected) when he pledged to end it in 2019.
KC's homicide rampage is eviscerating our community, and thus we cannot rejoice in the Chiefs, a new Royals stadium or even Christmas and the Holiday season until we stop the on-going slaughter of record numbers of innocent young adults and children. It is one thing to try and fail. It is another to repeatedly fail and then refuse to step down and let another try to succeed. There should be real consequences to a politician that breaks his word to the people over such a shocking breakdown of the public's safety. Unfortunately, not only has Lucas declined to hold himself accountable, but also neither has KC's cowardly media held Lucas accountable.
If Lucas cared more about the people than his political ambitions, he would submit his resignation before the end of 2023 and allow an effective leader to be elected.
