Kansas City 2023 Homicide #177: Man Killed In Homeless Camp

As Christmas approaches we get a glimpse of holiday desperation and tragedy near Downtown. 

We're now less than three homicides away from an all-time record for local killing and there's another death investigation underway. 

For now we round-up this report and share info with our blog community.

Homicide 1st St and Holmes

On 12/24/2023 just after midnight, officers were dispatched to 1st St and Holmes on a reported shooting.

Upon arrival, officers conducted an area canvassing in the wooded area of an unhoused camp and located an adult male suffering from unknown bodily trauma.  EMS arrived on scene and subsequently pronounced the victim deceased.  It was later discovered by the ME on scene, the victim suffered from apparent gunshot wounds.

The circumstances leading up to the homicide are unknown.  There is no one in custody at this time and we have no reason to believe there is an immediate risk to the public.

Homicide detectives and Crime Scene Personnel have responded to the scene.  They will be processing the scene to recover any evidence and speaking to any potential witnesses.

There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information provided to TIPS which leads to an arrest in the case.

We are committed to assisting victims of violent crimes through use of Missouri’s Protection Program for Victims/Witnesses of Violent Crime. Funding for temporary, or even permanent relocation, may be available but is subject to pre-approval by the State’s administering agency.

We are working with Partners for Peace in all our homicide investigations to monitor risks for retaliation and provide social services to affected residents.
