A federal jury in Kansas City on Tuesday found the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and some of the largest real estate brokers in the country guilty of colluding to inflate real estate commissions.

The National Association of Realtors, HomeServices of America and Keller Williams have been ordered to pay $1.78 billion in damages.

According to HousingWire, treble damages could result in the NAR and brokerages paying roughly $5.36 billion.

The verdict stated that the defendants “conspired to require home sellers to pay the broker representing the buyer of their homes in violation of federal antitrust law.”
