The jump was largely in the 15-17 age range. Black children had a murder rate 4.5 times than that of all children, and boys account for 71% of child murders. Four of the five child abuse deaths had current or past involvement with the Department for Children and Families.
The report indicates that guns were the reason weapon-related deaths increased. Firearms were the most common weapon used in youth homicides, suicides and accidental deaths.
"The rate of firearm deaths in Kansas has nearly doubled over the last five reporting years," the report said, with Shawnee, Wyandotte and Sedgwick counties having youth gun death rates higher than the statewide average.
Twenty Kansas children died from fentanyl over two-year span
That category also can include drug overdoses, which have seen a significant increase in the past two years due to fentanyl. The state recorded 11 child deaths from fentanyl in 2020 and nine in 2021, such as the case of a teenager who thought they took a prescription pain pill but was found unresponsive the next morning. Zero Kansas youths died from fentanyl in 2017, 2018 or 2019.
