A few things we want to emphasize in this response to dead-tree hype coverage . . .
PRIVATE FUNDING FOR THE SOUTH LOOP IS UNSECURED, SO FAR WE'RE JUST TALKING PROMISES FROM CORPORATIONS NOT CONTRACTS!!!
This is the same trick that local politicos ran with the animal shelter when MILLIONS in donations were pledged but then never materialized.
A quick tidbit . . .
$217 Million is the lowest estimate we've seen so far. The bidding started at 350 MILLION BUCKS but has now been downsized in order to gain more traction.
Finally . . .
KANSAS CITY STAR FORGETS THAT FEDS REJECTED THIS PLAN IN 2023!!!
Here's the money line from a friendly administration . . .
"In the USDOT’s “FY 2022 Mega Ratings Report,” officials did not issue a recommendation for the grant, pointing to four shortcomings: cost-effectiveness, lack of “stable and dependable” sources of non-federal funding, capacity to carry out the project, and the necessary data collection and analysis. "
One last thing . . .
If the Kansas City Star is pushing this project, CLEARLY, it's a disaster waiting to happen.
Here's their side of the story and straight up propaganda from a formerly great newspaper that has lost nearly all of its luster and relevance . . . Check-it:
"Along with the $68 million in tax dollars secured so far, a robust private financing campaign is underway with a goal of non-governmental donations covering 40% of the project cost."

$217 million plan would reshape downtown KC with park, attractions over busy highway
"The South Loop is an active reclamation of space for all Kansas Citians. It will be a call to action for healing the wounds created by our highway system throughout the urban core," said Jon Stephens, president and CEO Kansas City's port authority.
