Kansas City 2023 Homicide #147: Northeast Victim Shot Dead During Robbery

The level of local violence continues to escalate in KCMO as our homicide count nearly keeps pace with record breaking 2020 numbers and eclipses last year's YTD total by more than 15%.

Here is the first report from the latest fatality . . .

Homicide 2700 block of Independence Ave.

Today just after noon officers were dispatched to a business in the 2700 block of Independence avenue on a shooting call.

On arrival officers were directed inside the business where they located an adult male shooting victim unresponsive.

Officers summoned EMS into the scene for treatment of the victim. EMS declared the victim deceased here at the scene.

Officers detained a subject of interest, an adult male, at the scene for further investigation.

Preliminary investigation indicates the victim and the subject of interest were inside the business when they became involved in an interaction that led to one or more shots being fired and the victim was struck.

Homicide detectives and Crime Scene Investigators are speaking to people who were at the scene when officers arrived, canvassing for witnesses, and processing the scene for evidence.

Detectives are not searching for any additional suspects at this time.

We are working with Partners for Peace in all our homicide investigations to monitor risks for retaliation and provide social services to affected residents.
