Kansas City Doubts Mayor Q Reassurance Amid Plaza Default?!?

Last night, news of an EPIC loan default by County Club Plaza owners sent shock waves through Midtown neighborhoods.

Real talk . . .

LONGTIME KANSAS CITY RESIDENTS FEAR THE PLAZA MIGHT BE GOING THE WAY OF DEAD MALLS ACROSS THE NATION!!!

From Bannister to Metcalf South . . . Dead malls sting Kansas City consumers because they're a stark reminder that there's really no such thing as "pure capitalism" and even the strongest economy can be doomed by mismanagement and fear.

And yes . . .

Sorry for the TKC repeat but Mayor Q deserves a big part of the blame for the demise of the Plaza.

Time and again we remember that during historic 2020 riots Mayor Quinton Lucas sided with an angry mob and chanted "no justice, no peace" as cops on the other side of the protest scrambled to control a riot that would last nearly two weeks.

The Mayor has never answered for this lapse in judgement that would precipitate months of panic on The Plaza.

Even as COVID and online retail took their toll . . . An elected official actively engaging with a crowd that looted stores and burned cars sent a clear message to everyone who was watching . . . At a crucial moment, Mayor Q valued political capital more than public safety for nearby residents & businesses.

The default is just a symptom of a problem.

Until public safety is a priority for leaders the Plaza and throughout Kansas City . . . Things will only continue to get worse.

Also . . . Attending a public meeting about paving over the place without much room for merchants or owners isn't really a good look.

Accordingly . . .

The Mayor's reassurance is nice, PROBABLY HINTS MUNICIPAL TAKEOVER and offers a glimpse at yet another Kansas City crisis without any semblance of a plan about how 12th & Oak is going improve a worsening situation that Mayor Q helped to exacerbate.

Here's his side of the story . . .

"For a century, the Country Club Plaza has been an essential part of the Kansas City experience. We will continue our work to ensure that patrons, neighbors, residents, and all in our region are able to enjoy the Plaza for another century."

Developing . . .
