
This time around Kansas City Mayor & Council have even less credibility when it comes to managing the local economy.
Even worse . . .
Office space collapse and the demise of downtown growth proves that so much city hall financial booster-ism was misinformed and didn't really understand municipal markets.
Practical observation . . .
THE STREETCAR WAS SUPPOSED TO SAVE DOWNTOWN BUT AFTER SEVEN YEARS ITS MAIN STOP IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN STANDS NEXT TO EMPTY RESTAURANT SPACE!!!
Riddle how that half billion dollar investment works and it might provide a clue as the economic prowess of politicos begging for money & votes.
Of course, here's a more optimistic & professional view that blames white people or whatever . . .
Kansas City was in a different era then. Economic development was geared toward job creation and enticing big companies to plant a flag in Kansas City. Construction on the luxury One Light apartments downtown had just begun, as part of larger efforts to revitalize downtown.
Today, conversations around development have shifted, reflecting a change in priorities. Preserving and building more affordable housing in the face of skyrocketing rent has taken center stage.
