Here's Why Country Club Plaza 'Pedestrian-Friendly' Plans Already FAILED

We enjoyed the discussion over the past week and yesterday there was an important conversation about public safety that our blog community sparked better than any other news outlet.

However . . .

EVERY PROPOSED SOLUTION MUST HAVE OPT-IN FROM STAKEHOLDERS AND THIS CONVERSATION DIDN'T COME CLOSE!!!

"Roughly 125 people came out to hear the idea and offer their takes during a public meeting in the Kansas City Public Library’s Plaza branch at 48th and Main streets. Some expressed belief that the Plaza has been in decline over the years, while others were hopeful for a shopping experience without worrying about vehicular traffic."

Here's the money line and maybe a reason not to take any of this too seriously . . .

"Notably absent from Monday’s panel was representation of the owners and operators of the Plaza."

Let's make it plain for the cheap seats . . .

Country Club Plaza shops sound off on group looking to make the area more pedestrian friendly

KMBC 9 didn't find a single business that wasn't on board with the ideas proposed by Urban Lab KC


Kansas City's Plaza could be closed to cars under 'pedestrian-friendly' proposal

"Nobody wants to break the Plaza. We want more people there," said Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, citing a "real concern" about growth of the historic shopping district.


Can the Plaza be more than shopping and dining? One group thinks so.

The idea of a pedestrian-only stretch on the Country Club Plaza drew attention when Mayor Quinton Lucas tweeted a rendering from a group called Urban Lab KC. Monday night, the group offered a closer look at various options.
