Will Voters Fight Impending Jackson County Statue Removal?!?

Consider . . .

In 2020, more than 70% of Jackson County voters voted to keep statues of former slaver Prez Andrew Jackson in front of the downtown & Independence Courthouse.

This week . . . That decision will, likely, be negated . . .

"Jackson County legislators voted 7-1 in favor of a resolution to hire a company to remove and store two statues of former President Andrew Jackson from outside the county courthouses in Kansas City and Independence."

And this begs the question . . .

WILL VOTERS PUSH BACK AGAINST THIS POWER MOVE IN DEFIANCE OF THE ELECTORATE?!?

Our TKC guess is .  . . NO . . . Sorry.

Update . . .

The KSHB story doesn't make it clear BUT THIS ISSUE WILL/MIGHT GO TO THE BALLOT AGAIN!!! The courthouse backed off immediate removal after public push back.

A quote on the topic that is spin and a sign of more internal strife inside the courthouse . . .

"There are several procedural steps ahead before the statues can actually be removed, Caleb Clifford, chief of staff for the Jackson County Executive’s Office, said in an email.

"The resolution calls for the issue to be placed before voters on the November 2024 ballot. To do that, the legislature will need to pass an ordinance placing the issue on the ballot, he said."

Now . . .

We speculate about the lack of outrage primarily because the property tax discussion is far more important. Also, paying to clean up constant tagging that would take place by vigilantes waiting in the wings would be expensive for taxpayers.

Still . . . This mostly meaningless moral victory signals a dangerous trend. Local politicos are now unafraid to snub voters . . . The stakes are low for now . . . And, again, nobody cares that much about history to mount a serious resistance. But rejecting the outcome of elections AND POSSIBLY PUTTING THE ISSUE ON THE BALLOT AGAIN SO QUICKLY, no matter how trivial, isn't a good look for politicos and does, in fact, threaten our Democracy.

Still . . .

This would be a PERFECT chance for an EPIC BO JACKSON COUNTY RENAME out of respect and in celebration of a historic figure who actually unites people in celebration of triumph, skill and video game techno glory.
