Kansas City 2023 Homicide #99: Surge Hits 35% Over Last Year

Just a quick bit of number crunching on this town's worsening crisis . . .

Last year around this time KCMO homicides numbered only 73.

Today's spate of deadly gunfire brings us to 99. 

That's a 35% increase in killing year to date.

Remember that in 2020, in the midst of pandemic lockdowns and social justice rioting/uprising -- Homicides had only numbered 93 -- And that was the deadliest year in Kansas City, Missouri history.

Tragically, it is very likely that we'll cross the century mark ahead of July 4th.

Here's today's report . . . 

20th and Oakley Homicide

On 7/2/2023 just before 5 pm, officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of Oakley on a reported shooting.

Upon arrival, officers located an adult male lying out front of a residence unresponsive and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.  EMS arrived on scene and declared the victim deceased.

Detectives have a person of interest still at large.  There is not an immediate threat to the public at this time.  The circumstances surrounding the homicide appear to be the result of an argument.

Homicide detectives and Crime Scene Personnel have responded to the scene.  They will be processing the scene to recover any evidence and speaking to any potential witnesses.

There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information provided to TIPS which leads to an arrest in the case.

We are working with Partners for Peace in all our homicide investigations to monitor risks for retaliation and provide social services to affected residents.
