The city council voted to change the rules on chicken-keeping last year because of the amount of staff time and frustration that went into moving them through the city planning commission.
The ordinance had allowed chickens by right — that is, without the need for special zoning permits or review — on property over three acres.

Overland Park says backyard chicken pilot has been success so far
City councilmembers now will begin to consider whether to make the chicken rules permanent, as some members of the council's Community Development Committee proposed at a meeting Wednesday. They also discussed reducing the quarter-acre minimum requirement or even dropping it altogether.
