Actually . . . It's quite simple and we won't waste too much time on very easy-to-explain phenomena that sparked the inevitable, upcoming departure.
The drama takes place in three parts . . .
1. New ownership has been deceptive and unwilling to play ball with local politicos
To his credit, billionaire Sherman isn't a nice guy and seems to regard the rest of us peons that he doesn't have to please. Fair enough.
The front office of the Royals has adopted this directive from ownership and have only shared deets amid outright protest.
2. Kansas City East Village is a doomed urban renewal scheme prizing equity and reparations over convenience & fun
Nobody wants to save the world by going to a ball game.
At the ballpark, people want to drink beer, yell at millionaires for their minor failings and eat tons of garbage food.
The East Village is folly dreamed up by sociology majors who don't watch sports.
Meanwhile . . .
NKC doesn't have Kansas City East side crime problems and there is better access to the highway AND future for mass transit access.
3. Downtown Kansas City momentum is now moving in wrong direction amid rising taxes & inflation
The plan has always been to relocate/gentrify all of the poor people out of the central city and make a new place for the upwardly mobile.
Sounds nice.
But then COVID happened and turned the commercial real estate market into garbage.
Recovery has yet to take hold downtown and momentum is now moving against developer caste and their ponzi schemes which desperately need more investment.
This might inspire a fierce push for the Royals . . . If only there was the political will . . .
BONUS . . .
Kansas City is now without strong political leadership
The current crew at city hall DO NOT HAVE A MANDATE FROM VOTERS.
There was very little interest from the electorate in this week's election and overall only a small cadre of elites run the politics of this town.
That kind environment leaves very little room for a groundswell of support for keeping the Royals and even minor opposition might be too much to overcome for are weak millennial leaders.
Meanwhile . . .
Mayor Q is more interested in this D.C. job than doing anything that impacts the future of this cowtown.
For these reasons and so many more . . .
Dedicated denizens of our www.TonysKansasCity.com blog community suggest . . .
It might be time to wish the home team the best as they leave for the nicer side or the bridge like so many other former residents.
Developing . . .
