Or should this be a caption contest . . .
Our TKC suggestion:
Clay Chastain seyz "Missed it by THAT MUCH."
But I digress . . .
Remember that last week, Mr. Chastain was blown out of a low turnout election by 80 points.
Nevertheless . . . He persists.
And maybe even has our respect for his perseverance from the beautiful state of Virginia.
Accordingly . . . We'll leave it to the transit leader to explain himself. Here's his latest presser:
Activist Chastain press release: Okay, after an overwhelming show of voter confidence (10% of registered voters elected Lucas) and support from the media (Star & KCUR) our smart, able and transparent Mayor (who refused to debate his opponent and had him illegally prosecuted for trespassing) is going to keep minding our ailing store (until he bolts for DC). Meanwhile, I remain committed to KC and fixing our store, as follows:
In a few days, we will begin collecting signatures to put before voters (November ballot) a titanic initiative designed to make titanic improvements to Kansas City. But first (and for the record), let me take our Community down memory lane as to why I keep "doing this" (besides the obvious unmet-need to fix KC):
I
In 1995, Cleaver led the Council in refusing to place my valid petition (to restore & reuse Union Station) on the ballot. I sued. I won. Judge Holliger ordered Cleaver to place the petition before voters. Cleaver refused, and appealed. During the appeal, Cleaver rushed his competing Union Station (bi-state) plan before voters. It won. The court then had to declare my Union Station Initiative (petition), "Moot". Cleaver & the Council made sure it was never voted on, even though it was first in line.
In 2007, Funkhouser led the Council in overturning my 2006 light rail election victory (supported by 75,000 voters - "regular folks") falsely claiming it was (100%) "unworkable". Funkhouser & the Council deemed it "unworkable" because it was my plan (and victory), not theirs.
In 2011, James led the Council in refusing to place my valid light rail petition before voters. I sued. I won. The Supreme Court ordered James to place the petition before voters. However, due to an honest error in the wording of the petition ordinance (made by me), James acted in bad faith and exploited that error by putting only the tax funding mechanism on the ballot and not the light rail plan itself! James did not want my light rail plan threatening his streetcar plan. I had to issue a press release advising voters to vote against my own initiative.
In 2015, James led the Council in placing my light rail plan on the ballot but not before corrupting the language by turning it into a vague Streetcar proposal (no mention of light rail whatsoever) to further his streetcar ambition. I had to issue a press release advising voters to vote against my own initiative.
In 2019, Lucas led the Council in refusing, once again, to place my valid light rail initiative on the ballot. I ran for Mayor (4-years later) because of Lucas' betrayal of his promise to be a transparent Mayor.
Dear Mayor Lucas & new Council members: There will be a legal and political revolution if you mess with putting this Petition Initiative (if found valid by the Clerk) on the November ballot, or do so without the ballot language remaining completely intact.
Dear local media: I will stop running for Mayor & stop doing petition drives (even if the City remains unfixed) when the City places a valid petition of mine on the ballot (win or lose) in its "original form". Now you know my official answer to the question you keep asking me.
Clay Chastain
