We've gotta be careful with this one so forgive us if we merely summarize what we know so far . . . This info comes by way of city hall chatter and a bit of behind the scenes flexing.
The basics . . .
STRANGELY, KANSAS CITY LEGAL IS READY TO PUSH BACK AGAINST ALLEGATIONS THAT NORTHLAND DEVELOPMENT DOESN'T MEET MINORITY HIRING GOALS!!!
Nobody hired TKC to work on this project so we're not taking sides . . . Instead, we think it serves the public good to consider about the deets of the ongoing slap fight.
First, let's remember the prime mover in the story . . .
For now . . . We don't think it worked.
In the meantime . . .
Allegations about minority contracting goals hit home for the current administration and it seems like they put their back into diffusing the controversy.
A few main points . . .
- The WBE/MBE rules don't apply to this project because the incentive structure isn't a straight up TIF.
Without putting you to sleep with KCMO contracting rules . . . The basics: From the start, the complaint might not apply to the META project according to a few denizens of the city's legal team . . . In messages they're communicating behind the scenes.
- A great many facts in a memo about the project are just plain wrong.
Insiders who have seen the dox claim that it's mostly a hot mess that looks like a far too wordy memo written in anger.
- There are, in fact, MBE/WBE companies in play and a crackdown threatens to blow up their spot.
This might not be a big deal . . . But KCMO is quick to use this not-so-fun fact in order to guilt trip any critics of the project.
Accordingly . . .
We notice that criticism against the city manager has, yet again, vanished for the moment and it looks like he just might make it past the election.
And possibly longer than most would expect.
