The mayoral contender shares his insights on the local crime crisis . . .
Press release from Mayoral Candidate Clay Chastain: Mayor Lucas must do what's right for Kansas City and immediately resign from office for his 4-year long failure to end KC's record-setting homicide crisis (as he promised voters he would 4-years ago). Future lives, and our Community's well-being, depend on it.
Not only has Lucas failed to reduce annual homicides to under 100, he also breached his contract with voters to do so. Lucas telling voters he is "optimistic" things will improve, will no longer do. Lucas, blaming the crisis on gun manufacturers, will no longer do. Lucas, blaming the Republican General Assembly for not granting KC local control of the police, will no longer do. There are no excuses. Lucas told voters he (himself) would end the homicide crisis. On that score (and the score that matters most) Lucas has been a total failure.
This is a complex issue to rectify. No fair-minded person blames Lucas for the evolving homicide crisis itself. But Lucas is to blame for promising voters he had answers to halt the homicide crisis (to get elected) when he (obviously) had no real answers to successfully solve the problem. And Lucas' proposal for committing $30 million of taxpayer funds (over a 6-year period) to stop the murders is like trying to fight a forest fire with a garden hose.
I too promise voters I have a comprehensive plan to end the homicide crisis by year three of my administration. The difference is, unlike Lucas, I will step down as Mayor if I do not keep my pledge to voters.
Lucas must put his personal political ambition aside and resign because his lack of answers to this serious community-crushing issue is taking lives, ruining families and destroying the fabric and future of Kansas City.
