Kansas City police shoot, kill armed man near 27th, Brighton Avenue

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A man who was allegedly pointing a hand gun at people is dead after being shot by a Kansas City police officer Wednesday afternoon. Just after 4:30 p.m., Kansas City officers were made aware of a man pointing a handgun at people and acting erratically in the area of E.


Extra security at Ruskin High School following social media threat

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Hickman Mills School District will provide extra security at Ruskin High School Thursday after a social media threat. District spokesperson Justin Robinson says a student posted the threat online Wednesday. When the district learned of the threat, police were contacted and a note was sent to families, explaining the reasoning for added security.


Dozens canvass neighborhoods near 35th and Prospect to try and reduce crime

Dozens of people canvassed the neighborhoods surrounding 35th and Prospect on Tuesday afternoon in an effort to reduce crime following a violent weekend in Kansas City.Two people were shot and killed in two separate cases near 35th and Prospect over the weekend.


Kansas City family impacted by gun violence reacts to Ralph Yarl shooting

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A family who lost their son nearly six years ago says the Ralph Yarl shooting triggered memories of when they lost 19-year-old Chris Hutson to a road-rage shooting. Hutson was on the phone with his parents, Carthesa and Christopher Hutson Sr., driving down Holmes Road before he was shot and killed by John Young.


Suspect in fatal shooting along I-70 in Oak Grove in custody after overnight manhunt

The man at the center of a massive search following a shooting on a busy stretch of the interstate has been taken into custody. Police were searching for 18-year-old Charles J. Smith in connection with the deadly shooting along Interstate 70 in Oak Grove, Missouri. The shooting happened after 4 p.m.


'It's to know that you mattered': New KS law gives victims of child sexual abuse more time to file lawsuits

SHAWNEE, Kan. - Kansas took a big leap towards victim advocacy earlier this week when Gov. Laura Kelly signed a bill to give survivors of child sexual abuse more time to file lawsuits. The new law will allow police to pursue criminal cases of child sexual abuse indefinitely and give survivors until they turn 31 and three years after a criminal conviction to file a lawsuit.


Cass County man blamed dead girlfriend for shooting, dumping gun: court docs

PECULIAR, Mo. - Court documents say a Cass County homicide suspect told investigators his girlfriend shot herself in the head then threw the gun in a pond before she died in their kitchen. Authorities aren't buying it. Route C is one of the main roads cutting through Peculiar, Missouri, and the home where the deadly shooting happened is hard to miss.


Kansas City police determine grenade found in Liberty 'not live'

The department says they investigated the device after someone reportedly found what they suspected was an explosive while they were cleaning.


Suspect, shot following burglary at Overland Park Airbnb property, charged

OLATHE, Kan. - A man who was shot following a recent burglary at an Airbnb in Overland Park, Kansas is charged. Johnson County prosecutors charged Marques Dewayne Hastings with burglary-dwelling firearm. According to court documents, Overland Park police responded to a residential burglary on April 10 near West 61st Terrace and Robinson Street.


Former Olathe teacher pleads guilty Thursday to having sex with 17-year-old student

A former Olathe Northwest High School teacher admitted in Johnson County District Court Thursday morning to having sex with a 17-year-old student. Steven Mesa, 48, pleaded guilty before Judge Timothy McCarthy to one count of unlawful sexual relations. Two counts of the same charge were dismissed by prosecutors.


Kidnapping suspect escapes after standoff with Kansas City police

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City police are searching for a man accused of abducting another adult after he escaped an overnight standoff. Around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, a man approached police near 23rd Street and Wheeling Avenue and told officers he had been kidnapped earlier that evening in Independence, Missouri.


Firefighters locate body after blaze in south Kansas City; death investigation underway

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A death investigation is underway after firefighters located a person dead inside a home after a fire in south Kansas City, Missouri. The fire happened at a home in the 8300 block of east 107th Street early Wednesday morning.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - According to the Second Chance Risk Reduction Program, 4,000 formally incarcerated people return to the Kansas City each year. Many people, like 49-year-old Desirai Carter, return to society after being incarcerated looking for a second chance, but it's not easy to come by.
