Quick tech consideration tonight . . .
WILL THIS LOW TURNOUT KANSAS CITY ELECTION FINALLY PROVE SOCIAL MEDIA EFFECTIVE AT INFLUENCING VOTERS?!?!
Consider . . .
News coverage of the election is minimal . . . The reality is that METRO AUDIENCES DON'T CARE MUCH ABOUT KCMO POLITICS and council contenders no longer have the cash to pay off major publications.
And so . . .
Candidates are desperately turning to places like Instagram in order to get their message across.
In fact . . . Insta more than Twitter or Facebook has been the most surprising move in this local election cycle.
I think we're all wise to Twitter bullies faking a constituency and using bots and faraway "friends" to make it seem like bike lanes have universal love . . . And Facebook is just some place to get in a bitter feud with some guy's very angry grandpa. We only lament that local candidates haven't started dancing on TikTok like Jackson Mahomes before the Chinese app is ultimately banned.
Meanwhile . . .
From TKC's vantage . . . It's kinda hilarious to see a local candidate on the same Insta feed with a big booty model and Chicano rodeo humor.
For instance . . .
A smiling Northland candidate dutifully ruined the fun after I was giggling uncontrollably at at this clip:
And so the answer to our post title question . . .
Nah . . . It's unlikely that social media is going to make the difference in this election and so far we've only seen big money candidates dedicate a fraction of their budget to buying flashy mobile phone adverts.
Still . . .
This tech gambit that doesn't really seem to effectively drill down into the muck of local voters & neighborhood politics inspires our TKC playlist for tonight on the topic of online illusions.
80s hair band tribute to the power of the image . . .
Thanks to the power of tech, we remember the 90s and this old school consideration of friends:
A more modern tribute to the social game for the crowd who started making "reels" as their pathway to fame & fortune . . .
NextGen lament for loveless future tech . . .
Did anybody ever think Myspace was going to bring them political power?!?
Regarding the root of it all . . .
And the whole premise of the rigged social media game . . .
As always, thanks for reading this week and have a safe and fun Saturday night.
