Bright Side Of Kansas City's Low Voter Turnout: Petition Power

This post was going to be yet another depressing romp through the decline of local Democracy and more people opting out of the process.

Sure . . . That's still kind of true.

However, we've got a couple of issues to sort through on the tragic topic of quickly approaching voter disappointment.

First and foremost . . .

Some have challenged TKC on the low-turnout prediction . . . And here's our reply . . .

Two uncontested council seats prove that there's very little interest in the upcoming election. The situation is nearly as dire as the KCPS school board wherein voters, parents and administrators don't want to be bothered with Democracy at all and local leaders are out there BEGGING people to participate.

But here's an alternative and even better perspective after a quick word with KICK-ASS INSIDERS:

A secondary benefit of low voter turnout . . .

ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN IN THIS UPCOMING ELECTION.

A quote from one of the great philosophers of our time kinda confirms this notion . . .

“Everyone has a plan: until they get punched in the face” – Mike Tyson.

And so . . .

Hundreds of thousands of dollars in polling for this election is basically just mental health therapy based on pseudoscience.

Single-digit turnout means that rumors, activist shenanigans and even weather can have a dramatic impact on any of these council races. Never mind all of the fun games that our locals love to play with mail-in ballots.

But here's the real bright side . . .

LOW TURNOUT MEANS LOWER THRESHOLDS FOR RECALL ELECTIONS & PETITIONS!!!

This is part of the reason why charter change is a big part of the mayor's reelection agenda.

However . . .

For the moment . . . The scales are tipping in the favor of those blessed few who are willing to do grassroots work in local Democracy.

Fewer voters puts every council member at risk and even Mayor Q might confront more challenges if his second term reign gets out of hand.

Insiders have already been talking about this aspect of the voting game . . . We just wanted to share the news and sneak peak at forthcoming excitement.

Developing . . .
