A relationship between Husch Blackwell and another firm competing for the KCI deal, Edgemoor Infrastructure & Real Estate, recently had come to the Burns & McDonnell team's attention.

Charles Renner, the lead Husch Blackwell attorney advising the city and the KCI developer selection committee, also was a lead attorney to Edgemoor on a public-private partnership project underway at the University of Kansas.

"The relationship between Husch Blackwell and one of the proposers creates a horrific conflict of interest that has tainted the selection process," David Frantze, a Stinson Leonard Street LLP attorney wrote. 

According to a statement from Burns & McDonnell, "the non-disclosure of this relationship certainly gives the appearance of impropriety."
