Kansas City Gunfire Erupts In Westport: Police Report NO THREAT To Nearby School

Kansas City's oldest entertainment district has always been sketchy at night, but daytime hours are typically uneventful . . .

Sadly, this latest report reveals rising danger near students.

Here's more info . . .

This afternoon just after 12:30pm officers were dispatched to the 3900 block of Broadway at the Plaza Academy High School on a shooting call.

On arrival officers contacted the victim, an adult male who is an employee of the school, in the front of the school on Broadway.

The victim relayed to officers that he was outside in back of the school, on Washington, as part of his role of arranging for the safe entry of the students returning to the school. He was alone outside the back of the school when an unknown vehicle pulled up and someone inside the vehicle fired multiple shots toward him striking him. He stated the vehicle then left the scene in an unknown direction on Washington. He then went inside and arranged for 911 to be called.

There is no indication there was any threat towards any students inside the school, or any attempts by the suspect(s) to enter the school at any point.

The victim was transported to the hospital with what is believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

School administrators went through their protocols and arranged for contact of parents and release of students to parents once police secured the surrounding area.

Responding officers closed the streets in front and back to arrange for the safe release of students and secured the school to prevent any additional threats.

Detectives are canvassing for witnesses in the surrounding area as well as interviewing anyone at the school who may have seen or heard anything or have any additional information.

If anyone has any information they are encouraged to contact the Assault Unit directly at 816-234-5227 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS, a reward for information leading to arrest in this case is available.
