Northeast schools may avoid closure

Abby HooverManaging Editor Relief flooded the Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) boardroom last Wednesday as the District Administration shared revised Blueprint 2030 recommendations, which include keeping three Northeast schools, previously considered for closure, open.  Northeast High School, James Elementary, Whittier Elementary and seven other schools were slated for closure or reuse in the Blueprint 2030 recommendations made on October 12.


Gladstone, Missouri teacher surprised with $25,000 Milken Educator Award

A Gladstone, Missouri teacher got a huge surprise Thursday morning. Vanessa Thompson, a second-grade teacher at Chapel Hill Elementary in the North Kansas City School District was surprised with a $25,000 award called the Milken Educator Award.The honor goes to only a handful of teachers across the country.She's the only recipient this year in Missouri.


North Kansas City School District hopes upcoming hiring event will help with staffing levels

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The North Kansas City School District is keeping up with its staffing needs at a time when other school districts are cutting bus routes or changing traditional school schedules to make up for lost workers. "We've been very fortunate," said Dawn Smith, the district's executive director of Human Resources.


Children's Mercy performs Kansas City's first dual pediatric heart, liver transplant

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - An incredible display of teamwork at Children's Mercy Hospital. An 18-year-old is Kansas City's first pediatric patient to undergo a dual heart and liver transplant. The operation happened in October 2022, when the patient was 17 years old. He was born with a rare genetic condition that caused him to go into cardiac failure.

The City of Lenexa is on track to rebuild its decades-old skate park by the end of 2023.The city announced Wednesday that community input has shaped plans for a new skate park that were presented at a city council meeting on Jan. 3, 2023.
