Kansas City Zoo announces birth of critically endangered eastern black rhinoceros calf

Oh baby, The Kansas City Zoo is celebrating a new arrival.Officials say an eastern black rhinoceros calf was born at the zoo in the early morning hours of New Year's Eve. The calf and its mother, 15-year-old Zuri, are doing well. In a news release, officials said the eastern black rhinoceros is critically endangered.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City, Missouri, Fire Department was called to two separate house fires overnight. The first started around 12:45 a.m. Thursday near E. 28th Street and Van Brunt. No one was inside the home at the time, and the fire was extinguished quickly, according to the fire chief.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Frontier Airlines now offers a nonstop flight from Kansas City International Airport to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The airline announced the planned service expansion in August. "We're proud to continue our commitment to adding new service from Kansas City," Daniel Shurz, senior vice president of commercial for Frontier Airlines, said in a statement.

Workers earning minimum wage in 23 states and the District of Columbia got a raise over the New Year's holiday, according to the Economic Policy Institute. Canadian company TC Energy will temporarily divert a north-central Kansas stream to isolate a four-mile stretch fouled by its busted Keystone oil pipeline. Last month's spill primarily polluted that stretch of Mill Creek, though benzene and other chemicals turned up farther downstream in levels that could ultimately harm wildlife - but that remain too low to pose concerns for public drinking water.
