Our younger readers won't remember this but it's important to note nevertheless . . .
Years ago, when Kansas City debated building a downtown arena . . . There was a promise of pro-sports teams along with a "renaissance" of activity and economic gain.
To be fair . . .
Despite semi-regular shootings, corporate welfare luxury living space and a maze of transit schemes: Downtown KC is in a much better place than it was 15 years ago.
However . . .
There was a lone reporter who warned that Downtown Kansas City shouldn't rely on the proposed arena for economic salvation BECAUSE without a professional sports team it would be nothing more than a place that hosted monster truck shows.
Actually, monster truck shows have been a staple of the arena for quite some time BUT this weekend it really stands out and puts our snooty "restaurant week" in perspective . . . Given that all of these folks will likely pick up a hot dog, some popcorn and nothing more amid their visit inside the loop . . .
Monster Jam features world-class athletes locked in intense competitions of speed and skill. Kansas City fans will be on the edge of their seats as world-class drivers show off crazy skills and all-out racing in fierce head-to-head battles for the event championship.
The 12,000-pound monster jam trucks push all limits in freestyle, skills, donuts, and racing competitions. Productions average two hours, including a 15–20-minute halftime. Each monster jam event will always include racing, two-wheel skills, and freestyle.
