The assumption on airport concessions is typically that no one else wants to bid because of one factor or another, such as the pandemic or upcoming expansion and renovation plans. But when one company and its partners keep getting the same contract over and over again, their incentives to make dramatic improvements diminishes because, well, why bother?

And sure, procedures could improve to make this look less like political payback. But why bother?

Editorial: No-bid airport concessions contract is extended again, and look who benefits

It's bad business practice by any measure to offer up a seven-year extension of a government-services contract to a single company without even bothering to see whether the competition might offer a better deal, and especially when the no-bid winner wasn't doing a great job in the first place.
