TKC Question: Taking Youngsters To Drag Shows Worse Than Family Trip To Hooters?!?

Over the past week right-wing pundits have been ranting about a drag show tour that invites youngsters to a rather nasty display of overtly sexual performances.

This week the controversy hit its zenith and has a local connection.

TKC has never "slipped one past the goalie" so this blog doesn't feel in any way qualified to give parenting advice.

That being noted . . . Yeah, the bawdy drag shows depicted ARE NOT something that we'd endorse for parents looking for age-appropriate entertainment for youngsters.

However . . .

On this blog it's our job to ask the stupid questions.

And so . . .

ARE DRAG SHOWS FOR YOUNGSTERS THAT MUCH WORSE THAN "FAMILY FRIENDLY" FUN AT HOOTERS?!?

Think about it . . .

First of all, the food is garbage.

Secondly . . .

Perpetuating idealized body images to youngsters that are glorified at Hooters has to at least influence their world view.

Most importantly . . .

Sorry, but the ladies at the "breastaurant" chain are, in fact, sexualized and the skimpy clothes are part of the experience along with the displays of soul-crushing servitude required of every good food server.

Like it or not . . . That's a very distinct world view that also seems to be politically incorrect.

Example . . .

New York Post:  I took my 9-year-old son to Hooters to celebrate good grades — trolls say I’m ‘creepy as f–k’

Again . . .

Don't get it twisted . . . TKC doesn't think bawdy adult humor should entertain youngsters and, in fact, this drag show seems far, far over the line . . . So much so that we're pretty sure the upcoming performance at Midland Theater in the P&L District might be cancelled. Deservedly so.

However . . .

Other activities like drag queen story hour seem harmless . . . Given that American drags shows are a tradition that dates back more than 100 years.

If we want to get really esoteric about it . . . Kabuki shows in Japan have a very proud 400 year history that might or might not be drag but certainly reminds us that there's a big world out there and our conceptions about gender appropriate behavior might be unduly influenced by cheesy TV programming that was more focused on selling consumer goods over serving the public trust.

But I digress . . .

Here's a peek at the right-wing rage . . . Some of it is genuine . . . And, sadly, a lot of it might also be the "dragphobia" that's sparking widespread debate . . .

Part of a national tour through the end of December, the show is the “most sexual and inappropriate family-friendly drag show I have ever attended,” reports independent journalist Taylor Hansen. “From simulating sex, talking dirty to the crowd, sexualizing children’s stories, and much more,” he continued.
