Or just about as safe as anything else in this Midwest murder capital.
Allow us to explain the question . . .
Recently, TKC readers question the safety of this event given that violent 2020 riots/uprising remains fresh in the mind of locals . . . Especially suburbanites who want to visit in order to break up the monotony amid quiet lives of desperation.
A few things to consider . . .
The Plaza still hasn't recovered from the COVID pandemic and a weeks worth of rioting that targeted the formerly iconic local shopping destination. Several shops remain closed and restaurants aren't running at full speed . . . Be nice to anybody waiting tables tonight.
Protesters and activists have often used the Plaza lighting as a platform for their demonstrations. That's not really a big deal but something that shouldn't surprise locals. Heck, protesting on the Plaza is a local tradition that even Mayor Q came out an yelled in the middle of a riot.
Before 2020 . . . The Plaza experienced an uptick in violence that was blamed on youngsters but was actually the "work" of younger adults. Similarly . . . Car crime is up across the metro so we don't want to single-out the Plaza for this trend despite a great deal of recent Internets chatter.
On the bright side . . .
Police are always out in full force to protect this event. There hasn't been a major incident in at least 20 years and THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF VISITORS ENJOY THE PLAZA LIGHTING TRADITION WITHOUT ANY TROUBLE.
In fact . . .
The biggest danger to the public is typically the sketchy local entertainment and constant crowd over-count.
And so . . .
Yes, KC can be a very a violent town but life is full of risks and a holiday lighting ceremony doesn't rank high on that list.
