Kansas City Star After Firefighter Shot Dead: Within Her Rights

In one of the most tone-deaf and irresponsible editorials we've ever read, today the Kansas City Star ignores public sentiment and supports an unpopular decision which dropped charges against a woman who shot and killed a firefighter amid a parking lot dispute.

Real talk . . .

PUBLIC SAFETY WORKERS ARE PISSED ABOUT MEAN JEAN'S DECISION TO DROP CHARGES & THE NEWSPAPER'S SCREED SIMPLY ADDS FUEL TO THE FIRE!!!

The tone of the editorial is arrogant, callous and completely indifferent to the concerns of police and firefighters.

Meanwhile, locals are justifiably concerned about safety and the paper seems to view this as a partisan culture war issue.

Notice a detached view that targets Missouri self-defense laws rather than addressing worsening violence on local streets.

Once again . . . The newspaper disappoints and doesn't show much regard for the people of this cowtown and valid concern over an uptick in deadly shootings . . . Here's the crux of their argument:

"Disagreements in complex cases such as these are inevitable. Santi was a dedicated firefighter, EMT and father, according to his obituary. But common decency shouldn’t be shoved aside when duly elected prosecutors such as Baker make legal decisions we disagree with. Levying threats at public officials is never tolerable . . . And yet the law seems clear that the woman was within her rights to stop a deadly threat with lethal force."

Prosecutors made lawful decision after KC firefighter's death. Threats are abhorrent

OPINION AND COMMENTARY You don't have to agree with Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker's decision not to pursue criminal charges in the fatal shooting of Kansas City firefighter Anthony Santi. But there are far better ways to express disappointment than sending racist and sexist threats to Baker and staff.
