Insiders Report Maj. Tim Hernandez Ranks Among New KCPD Chief Front Runners

Let's keep this matter-of-fact to start . . .

For those who don't know . . . Here's background on a longtime KCPD leader who is now under consideration for the top cop gig . . .

Maj. Tim Hernandez has an EXCELLENT reputation amongst his colleagues and many strong supporters in neighborhoods across Kansas City.

He is a 25 year veteran of the KCPD.

His criminal justice work in the community at-large and amongst criminology researchers has been consistently honored.

 Now . . .

INSIDERS: MAJ. TIM HERNANDEZ MOVES TO THE FOREFRONT OF CONTENDERS FOR NEW KANSAS CITY TOP COP!!!

As always, our blog looks at the political angle of every story first and foremost . . .

As we noted . . . Maj. Hernandez has many fans in local neighborhoods.

A few of his supporters rank in the membership of the Missouri House & State Senate AND THAT might help earn him in the job.

Now allow TKC a quick personal aside because, after all, this is a blog . . .

Some of our progressive or misinformed political rivals might think we're pushing this candidate because he's Hispanic/Latino and TKC is very proud of Tex-ican heritage when not annoying friends and relatives with smart-ass Westside chatter.

We've only met Maj. Hernandez once at a lunch chat with KCPD and he seemed like a very thoughtful person. However . . . Anybody who REALLY knows the Latino/Hispanic community in Kansas City understands that we're actually MUCH MORE CRITICAL OF EACH OTHER ANYONE ELSE. And so this post, obviously, isn't promo . . . Today's KCPD top cop job search update merely represents our understanding of how things are moving behind the scenes.

But I digress . . .

Here's something even more fun and worthy of debate . . .

If Maj. Hernandez earns the KCPD top cop job . . . Expect some very tense discussions and reaction from African-American clergy and urban leaders who have been attempting to flex and influence the selection process amid outcry against state control and the upcoming vote in favor of increasing KCPD funding.

A point of reference . . . In L.A. there is a similar but more dramatic ruckus over nasty comments recorded by racist Latino council members

We don't think it'll reach that pitch in KCMO  . . . BUT, real talk, there is a low-key demand for an African-American Chief and there will/might be anger of urban leaders don't get their way.

Again . . .

The most interesting part of this conversation will be witnessing the reaction from our East side friends if another "person of color" earns a top job but does not meet 'qualifications' (read: demands) that have been circulated in locally.

Developing . . .
