An embattled local shopping mall is teetering on the brink of economic collapse and holiday gunfire antics only serve to endanger the fading fortunes of this formerly glorious retail outlet.

According to the Independence Police Department, an off-duty officer was inside the mall around 3 p.m. and called to report the sound of gunshots.

When officers arrived, they determined that at least three shots were fired, but they were unable to find a suspect.

No injuries are reported. Police tell FOX4 that it's unclear at this time if the shooting was a random or targeted event.

Shots fired at Independence Center

Independence, Mo. - Independence police are investigating a shooting that occured in Indepndence Center. Officers received a call around 3 p.m. The shooting did take place inside the mall. It is unknown if there are any victims and no injuries have been reported at this time.

Police respond to shots fired incident at Independence Center

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Police in Independence responded to a shots fired incident at the Independence Center on Monday afternoon. According to Jack Taylor, spokesperson for the Independence Police Department, the suspect left the scene. Taylor said an initial investigation indicates three shots were fired inside a common area of the mall.
