This holiday was devised by former Mayor Sly James so that his upwardly mobile friends might take a moment of pause from buying up the treasures of the Far East on Amazon and maybe look at a few lonely local shops.

On this date in 2018, Mayor Sly James signed Resolution 180592 to celebrate the newest holiday “816 Day,” thanks to a collaborative effort by the Downtown Neighborhood Association and representatives from the 816 Day Planning Committee."
