The city council voted unanimously Monday to approve a special-use permit. Jake's Place Bar and Grill is now able to play cornhole in its parking lot for one year. If things go well, the permit could be renewed for four additional years.

Janine Linnell is excited to expand cornhole in Shawnee. She said she started offering the sport two years ago to get through the pandemic.

"We started the cornhole when COVID hit because it was outdoors. People felt comfortable about being outdoors and to be honest, it's what helped me pay the rent," said Linnell, who owns Jake's Place Bar and Grill.

It's a sport that kept a Shawnee business afloat during the pandemic and now it's getting even bigger. Jake's Place Bar and Grill is creating a recreational cornhole league and bringing a tournament to Shawnee.The city council voted unanimously Monday to approve a special-use permit.
