Upstart Politicos Crissy Dastrup & Justice Horn Answer Campaign Finance Reporting Criticism

Campaign finance reporting isn't fun or sexy but it's the most important part about political process that's ALWAYS overlooked by the MSM.

Accordingly . . .

Amongst Kansas City's political movers and shakers, a curious item from two upstart candidates has been circulating behind the scenes.

Special thanks to TOP RANKING INSIDERS for sharing perspective about the campaign finance reporting deets of KCMO 4th District In-District challenger Crissy Dastrup and Jackson County 1st District contender Justice Horn.

Let's take a peek at the offending entry . . .

Here's the word . . .

"You can't loan money between campaigns. That is one of the BIGGEST violations a committee can commit and it'll get you dinged EVERY TIME . . . It's more serious than most people understand. I don't know what they were thinking with this move but it's a very egregious rookie mistake . . . Part of the campaign finance reporting process is to make sure that candidates and their organization have a minimum level of competence to properly report financial disclosures . . . This report just looks like amateur hour and it's important that voters take notice."

Accordingly . . .

We thought it was important to seek a response so we reached out to Ms. Dastrup and she was kind enough to offer her perspective . . .

"For context (our recent learning journey!) Recently, state guidance changed to disallow contributions from campaign committee to committee, which includes loans.

In the MEC's 2022 Q2 reportable line items, there's still a line-item on the current form for committee to committee contributions (which we used for reference), and we were not aware of the recent change . It wasn’t a cash loan, but a check; that transaction refund is processing, and Justice’s campaign has paid that expense.

"After we filed our report, the MEC contacted us and walked us through how to reverse the transaction and submit an amended report, which we did.

"My official statement is “Thank you to the MEC staff for alerting us of the mistake immediately and walking us through steps to remain in compliance. The issue was resolved the same day and is reflected in the amended report."

And so . . . Thankfully the crisis was averted.

Meanwhile . . .

This episode is important for two reasons . . .

As silly election season takes hold . . .

Local hopefuls should know that very skilled and capable people are watching campaign finance reporting deets.

Also . . .

Upstart politicos are smart to admit missteps and address the challenges that confront them on the campaign trail.

Developing . . .
