KANSAS CITY AT-LARGE COUNCIL DISTRICTS CANCELLED?!?

A controversial political effort might be headed toward the ballot box with very little discussion.

Context that might be motivating council members Eric Bunch & Andrea Bough . . .

For quite some time many locals claim that "At-large" council positions are a legacy of a racist past. Bigger, better cities don't use them and the offices are seen a tool for white/corporate leadership that supersedes neighborhoods and smaller communities. About five years ago Congressman Cleaver led an unsuccessful effort to transition way from At-Large council positions.

The defense of the At-Large seats is scant but mostly serves to uphold the status quo and warns against the questionable redistricting policies that typically emerge after every census. For instance, Mayor Q and Freedom, Inc. didn't like the looks of GOP advances in Kansas City's Northland so they flipped the districts upside down in order to thwart the progress of potential rivals.

Right now one of our MOST KICK-ASS READERS shares an important perspective about the always tricky & corrupt process at 12th & Oak . . .

"The worst part is they are doing this on election day when all that are interested are working at polls or campaigns."

Check the legislation . . .

Ordinance #211125: Calling for submission to the voters of Kansas City, at an election to be held on April 5, 2022, a question amending the Charter of Kansas City to modify the number of council districts; directing the City Clerk to notify the responsible election authorities of the election on or before January 25, 2022; and recognizing this ordinance to have an accelerated effective date within the City Charter because it calls an election.
