Kansas City police investigate 2 shootings Wednesday afternoon

Police in Kansas City are investigating two shootings Wednesday afternoon.One shooting was reported at Broadway Boulevard and Knickerbocker Place. Authorities said the victim, a man, was in critical condition.A second shooting was reported nearby at 36th Street and Baltimore Avenue just after 5 p.m.Police described the victim's injuries as life-threatening.Investigators said they do not know if the shootings are connected.


I-470 temporarily closed for disposal of commercial grade explosive material

The Lee's Summit, Missouri Police Department temporarily closed a portion of northbound and southbound I-470 Wednesday for the disposal of a suspicious device near Strother Road. At approximately 11:40 a.m., officers were dispatched on the report of a suspicious item.


Kansas City man indicted for murder 3 years after deadly hit-and-run

CLAY COUNTY, Mo. - A grand jury indicted a man three years after he was originally charged with murder and other related crimes. Clay County's Fugitive Apprehension Unit arrested 46-year-old Michael W. Myers on Tuesday. Myers is accused of intentionally running over James Pettijohn with his truck in Gladstone in 2019.


Neighbor, prosecutor talk about fatal shooting after chase ends in Platte City

The Platte County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a homicide suspect was shot and killed by police and highway patrol troopers following a high-speed police chase late Tuesday night."Well, I was really kind of frightened I didn't know what was going on," said Margie Bucher.The neighborhood Bucher has called home for 21 years was surrounded by police Tuesday night as authorities searched for an armed homicide suspect."I'm not used to murderers or anybody running around.


Northeast Middle School stabbing suspect's case continued

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A pre-trial hearing for the 14-year-old charged with murder in the stabbing death of a Northeast Middle School student last month in Kansas City, Missouri, was continued Wednesday in Jackson County Family Court. Manny Guzman, 14, died from injuries sustained during an attack by another student on April 12 at Northeast Middle School.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Jealously over an ex-girlfriend may have fueled the crime-spree that led to Tuesday night's high speed chase and, ultimately, a police shooting at the end of a standoff. Kansas City, Kansas, police identified that man who died following the dangerous wrong-way pursuit on I-35, Shawnee Mission Parkway, and I-435 Tuesday night.


Merriam police hires extra 'co-responders' to help with mental health-related cases

MERRIAM, Kan. - Five police departments in Johnson County now have an extra co-responder to help with mental health cases. A co-responder is a licensed clinician employed by the Johnson County Mental Health Center. They undergo specialized training on top of their mental health expertise to work with officers on scene.


Move Over: KHP trooper's daughter raises awareness after near-tragic crash

ELLIS COUNTY, Kan. - A near-tragic event prompted the daughter of a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper to raise awareness for Kansas' "move over" law in hopes of expanding it and making penalties more serious. At about 9 a.m. on April 26, Trooper Shawn Summers was conducting a routine vehicle inspection near mile-marker 144 in Ellis County.
