Deadly Gunfire Pushes Kansas City Past Record Breaking Homicide Pace

This seemed like a peaceful week but a double shooting this afternoon shattered that illusion.

Accordingly and once again we believe this trend is one of the most important for locals to confront . . .

THE CURRENT RATE OF KILLING IN KANSAS CITY CONTINUES TO EXCEED THE PACE OF RECORD BREAKING HOMICIDES FOR 2020 AND 2021!!!

Remember . . .

At this point in 2021 Kansas City had recorded only 49 homicides . . . Today's killing could put KCMO as high as 50. At 157 homicides total -- 2021 was the 2nd highest deadliest year in local history.

In 2020 the local killing count around this calendar date was only 46 and that was the worst year for homicides in Kansas City history with a horrific total of 179.

Here's a glimpse at today's damage . . .

Fatal gunfire this afternoon . . .

Homicide 3500 blk Independence Ave.

Today just after 4pm officers were called to 3500 Independence Ave to the convenience store (express stop) on a shooting call.

On arrival officers located two adult male shooting victims just outside the store. One victim was unresponsive, another was severely injured.

EMS responded and declared the unresponsive victim deceased here at the scene.  The other injured victim was transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries and was most recently listed in critical condition.

Preliminary indication is there was an altercation inside the store that led to shots being fired and the two victims being struck.  There is no information on suspect or suspect vehicle description at this time.
There was a lot of vehicle and foot traffic around the area at this time and detectives are hopeful that someone heard or saw something.

If anyone has any information and has not talked to detectives yet they are asked to call the Homicide Unit directly at 816-234-5043, or the TIPS hotline anonymously at 816-464-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest in this case.

A death report from earlier today . . .

Homicide 40th and Troost - Late Death

On 4/22 about 10:20 pm officers were dispatched to 4047 Troost on a reported injury accident.  Arriving officers located an adult female injured at that scene.  Preliminary investigation later determined the female appeared to have been struck by a vehicle that later left the scene.  The vehicle striking the female appeared to have been the result of an aggravated assault with the vehicle rather than an accident/crash.

The injured female was taken to the hospital with what was described as life threatening injuries.  Detectives responded and conducted additional investigation.  Based on follow up investigation detectives located the vehicle believed to be involved and took a person of interest in custody for further investigation.

A case file was presented to Jackson County Prosecutors who filed charges for “Aggravated Assault 2nd Degree” and “Leaving the scene of an Accident.”

On 04-26-22 detectives were notified that the victim died from her injuries.  Detectives will work with prosecutors to determine any applicable additional or amended charges.
