TKC Told You So: Mayor Q Starts 'Defund Police' Part Deux!!!

Just as we warned at the outset of the day . . .

MAYOR Q LAUNCHES ANOTHER EFFORT TO DEFUND POLICE AND STRIP AWAY THEIR BUDGET INTO HIS OWN SLUSH FUND!!!

Remember . . .

Last time around MAYOR Q LOST THIS COURT FIGHT and it's uncertain what makes him think this time around will be any different. 

Check the important part of the decision in October . . . 

"In his ruling, Judge Patrick Campbell said Kansas City cannot change the police department's spending after appropriations without approval from the Kansas City Board of Police Commissioners.

"Campbell issued a writ of mandamus that will require the city to put $42.2 million back in the police department's budget for this fiscal year." 

Here's a quick update on this scheme . . .

(Mayor Quinton) Lucas on Thursday introduced an ordinance that would place $37.4 million of the department’s budget into a newly-formed fund to be controlled by the city manager, with its use to be negotiated with the Board of Police Commissioners. The mayor is calling it the Community Policing and Prevention Fund. This spending, if approved, would go toward hiring more officers, community outreach staff and 911 call-takers and funding other crime prevention initiatives. The proposal now goes to the council’s Finance Governance and Public Safety Committee for consideration.

Of course the newspaper is cheering him on . . .

Voters, on the other hand, have a good reason to remain skeptical about a slap fight over money whilst the Kansas City murder count continues to keep pace with record numbers and police leaders are worried about the ongoing staffing crisis. 

Something important that is often overlooked . . .

THERE IS NO BUDGET GUARANTEE FROM CITY HALL ABOUT THIS PROPOSED SLUSH FUND!!!

Corruption is a very REAL problem in Kansas City government and those who deny it either don't live here or just happen to be elbows deep in it.

THERE'S NO DENYING THIS IS ANOTHER DEFUND THE POLICE FIGHT!!! SUPPORTERS WANT CRITICS OF MAYOR Q TO ABANDON THE TERM BECAUSE IT'S ACCURATE & EFFECTIVE!!!

Ordinance #220216: Establishing the City of Kansas City, Missouri's expectation regarding the utilization of funds appropriated to the Board of Police Commissioners of Kansas City, Missouri from the Community Policing and Prevention Fund; directing the City Auditor to provide certain reporting; requesting the Board present on its use of funds from the Community Policing and Prevention Fund; and directing the Clerk to send a certified copy of this ordinance to the Board.
