Overland Park and Independence police said they've recently taken reports of thieves drilling into vehicle gas tanks and stealing the fuel inside.

The crime happened twice last week near West 25th Street South and South Crysler Avenue in Independence.

Officers took reports of someone drilling into the gas tanks of two pickups parked in the area, damaging the vehicles.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - There's a new warning about a crime that some are linking to the high price of gas, and metro police departments said there are a few cases of it happening in the Kansas City-area. Overland Park and Independence police said they've recently taken reports of thieves drilling into vehicle gas tanks and stealing the fuel inside.


Independence, Overland Park police report incidents of gas theft

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Two Kansas City area police departments have reported recent incidents of gas theft. Last week, security cameras on a street in Independence's captured the alleged fuel bandit carrying a container in their right hand as they walked over to John Blaser's Dodge Ram before crouching next to it.


Police in KC metro receive reports of thieves draining gas tanks

With gas prices on the rise, police are warning of fuel thefts happening across the metro. Criminals get under vehicles and drain the tanks. It has happened three times recently in Independence and Overland Park.On March 8 at 4:25 a.m., a man with a small gas can parks and approaches John Blaser's truck."Gets two gallons worth of gas, gets back in his vehicle and drives off.
