Kansas City Star Moves Out Of Country Club Plaza Post Office Box

For local journalists, the so-called "paper-of-record" operating out of a post office box on the Country Club Plaza is depressing - It's a sign that journalism is dying and no longer a financially viable practice in this digital era.

Accordingly . . .

Here's a bit of good news on the fortunes of a biz that now serves as a loss leader for a hedge fund . . .

The Star on Tuesday announced it had signed a lease with Crown Center Redevelopment Corp, a real estate subsidiary of Hallmark Cards that manages the 85-acre hotel, office and entertainment complex surrounding the company’s headquarters.

The newspaper will occupy a portion of 2405 Grand Boulevard, a 245,000-square-foot building that spans 14 floors. Through The Link, the tower is connected to Union Station, the shops at Crown Center, as well as nearby hotels and offices.

The Star anticipates moving into its new space in June or July. Terms of the lease were not disclosed.

Translation: These digs might be nicer given that local office space has been discounted after the pandemic . . . But now the newspaper is literally outside of the downtown loop and in a place that also houses dentists, insurance companies and other middle-class professionals.
