"The $140 million project is a joint effort between Americo Life, an affiliate of Financial Holding Corp., and Burns & McDonnell. The team broke ground on the building in 2020's first quarter. The building was meant to become the headquarters for Waddell & Reed Financial Inc., but Macquarie Asset Management announced in March 2021 it no longer would take occupancy shortly before acquiring the Overland Park firm.

"Over the summer, CBRE began listing 260,000 square feet within the tower for sublease. The structure was rebranded as 1400KC."

A building that inadvertently became Downtown's first speculative office development in decades sits a few months from completion, with ample space to accommodate large occupants. Workers are in the final stages of building 1400KC, which boasts eight office levels above a 10-story, 900-space parking garage at 1400 Baltimore Ave.
