Kansas City Star Demands Park Hill Teacher Dismissal Amid N-Word Controversy

Credit to TKC readers, most of you predicted as much.

What many locals witnessed . . .

A student screaming at the top of his lungs at a teacher using the N-word slur multiple times. Listen closely and the student also threatens to assault ("lay out") the instructor.

However, a new member of KC Star editorial Board believes that a "lack of cultural understanding" is cause for dismissal.

Again if we look past the racially charged politicking . . .

There are reasons beyond the pandemic for the teacher shortage crisis and a "cultural shift" wherein social media outrage outweighs reason might be part of it.

To be fair, here's how The Star sees it . . .

The student was not in the right, either. But under no circumstances should an educator use racial language . . .

The whole exchange demonstrated a lack of the compassion and cultural understanding every teacher needs to educate children of all races. He should not be allowed inside a Park Hill classroom again.

I watched the videos: Northland teacher made things worse using N-word with student

OPINION AND COMMENTARY Editorials and other Opinion content offer perspectives on issues important to our community and are independent from the work of our newsroom reporters. The Park Hill High School student who was suspended for violating a district policy against racist language was right: the teacher who confronted him about the use of the N-word doesn't get a free pass to lob racial epithets.
