Businesses are abandoning the Country Club Plaza en masse and this week a Kansas City artist has seized upon the opportunity in order to share her own special brand of creative push back.
To wit . . .
PEREGRINE HONING EXHIBITS HER WORK IN THE HEART OF THE COUNTRY CLUB PLAZA NOW THAT VICTORIA'S SECRET IS LEAVING!!!
Here's a peek at her artsy power move . . .
"Recently found out the Victoria’s Secret near birdies is closing. Tried to rent out the vacant windows to advertise my shop for Valentine’s Day. They told me only tenants were allowed to advertise on The Plaza. I said ok, I’ll be a tenant for a month. It’s a ghost town and corporate stores fill what’s left. The real estate agent told me he was concerned about our Instagram page @birdieslovesme . Looked at random empty places. Found a spot I was willing to rent and then was informed it was being used for storage. So here’s our “window display”. Hope Les Wexner appreciates."
This bit of corporate grave dancing is well deserved given that the former CEO she's snubbing was connected to the nasty Jeffery Epstein scandal.
Interestingly, today right across the street another longtime Country Club Plaza biz is shutting down.
Brighton Collectibles, which opened on the Country Club Plaza two decades ago, has closed. The Plaza currently has about two dozen empty spaces.
Accordingly . . .
Corporate retail is dying in Kansas City and across the nation . . . Credit to this KC-based globally recognized artist for drawing our attention to some of the issues that remain after the demise.
