Health pros are advising the golden ghetto against going into the new year without masks.

Health officials want school leaders to follow the science and keep the mask mandate going for now.

"You cannot predict if your child is going to get sick or not, and land in the hospital. Even though this is a new year, and there's excitement in the new year. We gotta do what we can do for now so we can get beyond this," said Myers.

Over 200 doctors and pediatricians wrote a letter to the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners, and other school leaders to continue the mask mandate for younger students.

As thousands of students head back to school, relaxed COVID protocols are a top concern among health officials, who say the number of COVID cases in kids is rising. "I have the feeling that once they go back, some are going back--some are going back today, some later this week, that it's going to go up even higher," said Dr. Angela Myers, an infectious disease specialist at Children's Mercy Hospital.
